Iron is considered a slow-moving element within the plant. Therefore, symptoms of its deficiency appear on young leaves, while the terminal bud remains alive. Yellowing appears on the young leaves, spreading between the veins that remain green. With continued deficiency, yellowing affects all parts of the leaf, which becomes pale white, and eventually burnt spots appear. The yellowing resulting from iron deficiency is called chlorosis. When symptoms of iron deficiency appear, it does not necessarily mean that it is not available in the soil. On the contrary, it has been found that most cases of iron deficiency occur in soils rich in this element, but it may be in a form that is not readily absorbable due to high soil pH or high levels of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Therefore, deficiency symptoms usually appear in plants growing in the limestone and alkaline soils of Egypt.
